The Woods is an exploration of how our experiences of such places are influenced by the stories from our childhood, in particular the classic European fairytales by Hans Christian Anderson, the Brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault, who wrote in the 19th, 18th and 17th centuries respectively. Their stories, rooted in centuries-old folklore, are commonly set in the woods – a place of peril, refuge or adventure - or sometimes all three.

The classic fairytales have become deeply imprinted on our consciousness. So much so that the moment we enter the embrace of a forest or wood - so separate from the wider world, so quiet, so elemental and so mysterious - whether as children or adults, our imaginations leap with ideas and visions let loose from those stories.

The sense that something or someone may be lurking in the shadows or edges of our vision is the thrill inherent in the mystery of every wood or forest. The stilled beauty holds both darkness and light, evoking the opaque magic of the old fairytales - sometimes sinister, sometimes benign, but always evanescent. Even the very term 'wood' summons up sensations of trepidation and exhilaration - and it those shifting forces in that preternatural shiver we feel in the woods which this exhibition will try to conjure. Every image in The Woods is gossamer, a story glimpsed, inviting the viewer to construct a private tale from their own instinctive reaction – peril, refuge or adventure.
