OPENING RECEPTION: Wednesday 2nd of July 6-8 PM
Wednesday 2nd of July Sunday 13th of July 2014
To be opened by photographer and storyteller William Yang
In TRANSLUCENCE Jacqui Dean reveals Australia's flora, native and introduced in radically new ways. Dean's vision reduces flowers to their essential, sculptural shapes, and translates them into exquisite black and white prints. Calla lilies are seen as never before with their curved flowers resembling the shape and texture of a crystal goblet. Dean's images of roses, through scanning and digital magic, reveal interlaced petals adopting textures that mimic a bridal veil.
X-Rays now reveal everything that lies beneath what our eyes can see; a negative tonal arena in which their inquisitive, diagnostic electrons reign supreme, effortlessly revealing both order and chaos in our biology. These rays also allow us to see the most intimate structures of, in Dean's case, her chosen Muse flowers allowing her to transform the pale vessel of a Calla Lily into a translucent, Arthurian crystal goblet or the unfolding petals of a rose into Tulle. The third century to concern us lies far deeper in antiquity, when a German artist named Albrecht Durer (1471-1528) decided simple blades of grass were worthy enough for him to commit their details to intricate, faithful drawings that now read as eternal as Shakespeare in their appeal to our humanity.
Jacqui Dean's passion for nature's prima donnas flowers has been so transformed into detailed expressions of the unknowable calligraphy of nature. Flora we once thought of as merely decorative, we now know to be an unbreakable link within Nature's balance. We could do worse than contemplate, through Jacqui Dean's images fragile essences of Nature's peerless beauty.
